Cross Curricular Thematic Learning

Integration of Alberta Curriculum learning outcomes ELAL, Math, Science, Social Studies.

  • Loose Parts
  • Loose Parts is a unique element used in the Reggio Emilia philosophy. It is an opportunity where students are given a provocation and the freedom to create what they see/understand/feel from that provocation. All material used during this class are recycled items or materials that students pick from nature (i.e. wine corks, paper towel tubes, bottle caps, leaves, sticks, seeds etc). This is a class where students are able to use their creativity, imagination and independence to create a finished product. These aspects are elements derived from the poem the 100 languages by Loris Malaguzzi which states that children learn in a variety of different ways.

  • Centers
  • With a stronger focus in kindergarten, centers are a time where students play to learn. With various stations and themes, students are able to pick where they start and where they will go next. Activities in each station include a provocation and a book related to each station/theme. There is a center based on the core subjects from the Alberta Curriculum.

  • Spanish Curriculum
  • We provide a strong Spanish literacy program in grades K-5 that is effectively supported within our English immersion environment, particularly because of our high focus on developing reading and writing skills in both languages.

This dual-language approach helps students develop strong literacy skills in both languages, fostering bilingualism and biliteracy. The emphasis on phonemic awareness, vocabulary development, reading comprehension, writing workshops and grammar in Spanish complements the English immersion curriculum. By providing culturally relevant and engaging materials, our school creates an environment where students feel valued and supported, enabling them to excel in both Spanish and English literacy.
